October 9, 2024 Sea Day #4
There are two more days of sailing before we arrive in Honolulu. This morning at 6 a.m. the temperature was 23°C. The clocks were set back an hour overnight.
In the states, today, it is the 60th anniversary of President Johnson’s proclamation of Leif Erikson Day, the Las Vegas Tropicana Hotel is slated for demolition to make way for a baseball stadium.
Florida is bracing for Category 5 hurricane Milton expected to make landfall on Florida’s western coast around Tampa Bay after noon in the state. By midnight in Florida the hurricane was downgraded to Category 3, but up to ten inches of rain is expected in Orlando and Daytona Beach as the storm goes east.
Being up early we walked the promenade Deck 3 before breakfast. The dining room did not open for breakfast until 7:30 a.m. We walked about 4 km watching the sun rise and saw a partial rainbow reflecting on the clouds lining the horizon.
We had breakfast with Louise from North Vancouver and Les and Shelby from Lethbridge.
We walked up to the pool on Deck 9 for the 10 a.m. Line Dancing lesson, where over 35 people participated in the lesson hosted by Declan. The warmup dance was “ ? city” then a run through of “Achy Breaky Heart” then a new dance that was simple incorporating many of the moves that were in other of the taught line dances. At 11 a.m. Virginia Stibolt’s lecture was about the formation of the Hawaiian islands and the immigration of the Polynesian people followed by Europeans and Americans.
During his noon announcement the captain said there was still 806 nautical miles to go to get to Honolulu. After a lunch of coffee and cookies, we went to the early afternoon talk about the Hawaiian culture. The rest of the afternoon we read then played the card game Five Crowns on Deck 9 in the Lido buffet where we had coffee and dessert.
We danced 15 minutes of the Ballroom Dance Hour before dashing to dinner with just Jo and Mike. Suzanne and Graham went to a specialty restaurant for dinner this evening. Jo and Mike will be going to the Pinnacle restaurant tomorrow evening.
The World Stage dance show tonight was called “Move”, by the modern dance troupe, The One Step Dance Company. At 9 p.m. by the Deck 9 main Lido pool, the Hawaiian Ambassadors played Hawaiian music on their ukuleles and sang Hawaiian songs to over 300 people gathered by the pool and on Deck 10 overlooking the pool.
