October 24, 2024 Vancouver Day #3

Cat’s 33rd birthday is today. She left for work a bit before 7:30 a.m. having made coffee for us.  Yesterday we had walked west, today we walked northeast to Gastown and Chinatown.

It was 5°C at 8 a.m. with a light breeze and sunny. Today’s high temperature was 12°C.

We ate breakfast at OEB Breakfast Co. (“O stands for outstanding people, E for embracing evolution and B stands for bold food integrity”), which was less than a 10 minute walk down Drake to False Creek.

Then we wandered over to Gastown and Chinatown, and into a bit of the east side where there were many people just sleeping on the street or in make shift tents. It was shortly after 10 a.m. In Gastown we saw the steam clock in operation. On Cordova we passed the interesting reinforced concrete St. James Anglican Church which has a slate roof. We found the Millennium Gate on East Pender. It was erected in 2002 to honour the Chinese settlers arriving since the late 19th century.  Nearby on top of a six storey building was a replica, in concrete, of a Long House.

On leaving Chinatown, we walked to International Square then climbed the 81 steps up to the intersection of Beatty and Dunsmuir. We  walked along Beatty passing BC Place where the BC Lions and the Vancouver Whitecaps football clubs play. There were several statues of Terry Fox in the plaza.

We decided to cross the Cambie Bridge arriving at the Olympic Village Station then walked along the seawall bordering the other side of False Creek, in the Fairview neighbourhood, through Charleston Park. We returned to Yaletown by walking over the Granville Bridge and over to Richards St to walk down to the Seaside Greenway on False Creek. Finally we found our way back to Davie and went for coffee at JJ Bean. We had walked leisurely over 16 kilometres in four hours.

Dinner this evening was at an Italian restaurant, Bonta Italian Ristorante, short walk away.

Total steps = 24,339
