October 7, 2024 Sea Day #2
The ship’s clocks were turned back one hour overnight as we travel west and will be changed two more hours before we reach Honolulu. The ocean was rougher during the night. You could feel the slight swaying of the ship even in our midship Deck 1 location. It rained during the night but was starting to clear by 8 a.m.
We had breakfast in the dining room with a couple from Victoria and a couple from Edmonton. The husband had worked on Baffin Island for 12 years at the Merry River mine. We then climbed to the Deck 9 Lido pool deck area for the 10 a.m. Line Dance lesson. Again there were about 30 people for Declan’s lesson. Today there were a few warmup gentle stretches. The first dance was “Achy Breaky Heart”, followed by “YMCA”. The quick teach dance was the Electric Side. Declan will be hosting the lessons on sea days and is encouraging participants to attend the Orange Night party for line dancing as a group. The Orange Party is scheduled for the evening of October 16 after the ship leaves Hilo to return to Vancouver.
The two meters waves reduced to one meter late in the morning but by mid afternoon they were back to two meters with white caps. During the captain’s noon announcement our position was 41°47”N and 134°26” W. The wind was southwest 12km and the temperature was 20°. We had travelled 793 nautical miles and still had 1,722 nm to get to Honolulu. The navigation officer and cadets were plotting the route in the Crow’s Nest lounge again today at 1 p.m.
We went to the shopping show at noon in B.B. King’s Blues Club attended by about 170 other passengers. The main reason was to get the complimentary port maps, and VIP cards for Holland America affiliated stores that offered a discount, if you had a Holland America VIP card. The presentation also highlighted the popular sights of the four ports that we will visit. It ended just before 1 p.m., so we had time to get to the dining room before it closed at 1 p.m.
We spent the afternoon reading before going to B.B. King’s Blues Club for the 5 p.m. ballroom dance hour. The first three orchestral tunes were not easily danced music so we decided to give up and go to the Dining Room before the doors closed at 5:15 p.m. for assigned seating guests. There was a new coupe at our table replacing Grace and Betty. Jo and Mike were from Oakville, Ontario. They are good company and seemed to enjoy Suzanne, Graham and us. There was still a gentle swaying of the ship during dinner.
Today show tonight was an accordionist Annie Gong.
