October 8, 2024 Sea Day #3

We awoke to grey clouds at the horizon with the ocean showing two meter swells. At 7 a.m. the temperature was 20°C and a wind NNW 14.6 mph, about 23 km/hour.  We watched the sun rise behind the horizon clouds. Before breakfast we walked five laps on Deck 3, the Promenade deck. Three laps equals one mile.

We had breakfast in the dining room with Ron and Linda from Edmonton and Jane from Port Coquitlam, B.C. Then we went to the 9 a.m. Coffee with Alex interviewing some of the Navigation and Bridge crew and the two cadets in the Rolling Stone Lounge. There was coffee, tea, muffins and cookies.

Next we climbed up to Deck 9’s Lido Pool area for the 10 a.m. Line Dancing lesson, where almost 40 people participated today.  Declan’s warmup dance was Electric Slide. We learned a new simple line dance, followed by the Cuban Shuffle. Declan also mentioned that Line Dance would kick off the Orange Party in B.B. King’s Blues Club on the day that we leave Hilo.

At 11 a.m., in the World Stage, botanist Virginia Stibolt presented a lecture about Rainforests. We had a quick lunch ordering either a vegetable quiche or ham and edam cheese sandwich with coffees before catching the end of the Effy jewelry seminar on Diamonds & Gemstones, so that we could get a complimentary bead bracelet for our great-nieces. There was also a draw for a piece of jewellery which was won by a woman from Winnipeg.

The captain’s noon announcement informed us that there are 1,274 nautical miles to get to Honolulu. Koningsdam is travelling at an average speed of 18.6 nm or 34 km/hour

In the World Stage at 1 p.m. the cruise and travel director, Alex, presented Hawaii Up Close explaining some of islands of Hawaii’s history and culture.

The rest of the afternoon we read our books.

At the start of the 5 p.m. Ballroom Dance Hour, Larry gave the DJ a three tune list of requests, since the DJ had mentioned people could request tunes. He played two of the three suggestions and played the third as we departed to get to the dining room before the doors closed at 5:15 p.m. Jo, Mike, Suzanne and Graham were already seated. We did see Pam at line dance today, but she said they would not be there for dinner.

After dinner we got our books, then cappuccinos from the Grand Dutch Café. We found seats in the World Seat theatre 30 minutes before the show of comedian Kevon Flynn. By 7:45 p.m. most of the seats were taken. It was a standing room only 45 minute  show that was okay. We returned to our stateroom to read and set the clocks back another hour.
